Poem | Poisonous Faith

Poisonous Faith, A Poem by Jennifer Gulbrandsen

Do we bargain with God—

Or do we trade with the Devil?

The time has come when

I have to choose my poison.

Sometimes the shadow

Brings the brightest light

Testing my faith—my patience

Always the walking wounded; anxiously waiting.

The ebb and flow of

Taking the biggest leap

And letting everything you know

Attach to faith and go.

Someone will get hurt

Pain is unavoidable

That one condition built to last

Rather than hide; we brace ourselves.

But I see that Georgia sunset

How it smolders in your eyes

When you look at me

Begging for trust; that poisonous faith.

That gaze of yours—

Soothes the cold north wind

Swirling around my soul until I burn

As brightly as you.

I can't speak it into existence,

But I'm in love with

Being alive again

Sometimes Destiny smiles upon us.

Faith in something you love can

Sometimes feel like a death

Having it may kill you

Losing it possibly fatal.

Listening to the thunder,

It's the cacophony of my soul

Fear, love, loss, hope

And that terrifying need of faith.

Faith will be my poison

Trust the dram I drink

With the silent prayer

It's really the antidote.
