POEM | The Soulmates

The first - We were children

I was his safety, his light

My stem, his flower

The first time I walked away from love -

And it changed him forever.

The second - Made me feel

He opened up so much for me

Midnight drives, late night calls

He was the first man I lied to -

And it changed him forever.

The third - Showed me the world

She taught me strength

Radical acceptance, standing up

I walked away from her, too -

And it changed her forever.

The fourth - Held me captive

I was his biggest and only accomplishment

A challenge to conquer, a decoration

I never came back -

And it changed him forever.

The fifth - Was unconditional

A load bearing wall - loyal, indestructible

The first man to always say he loved me first

Yet, I didn’t choose him -

And it changed him forever.

The sixth - A china shop bull

I can still hear the way he says my name

I was the first person to love him as is

It was too terrifying for him to bear -

And it changed him forever.

The seventh - My cheerleader, my life raft

No one had ever wanted me to fly higher

I loved him harder than anyone ever had

But I called him a coward -

And it changed him forever.

The eighth - The last. Infinity.

There will not be another, for this is safety

I have done everything I have done before

Yet, he always comes back -

And it changed me forever.
