Flash Fiction | Eclipse

In the city of Scarvidia, emotions were not just fleeting expressions of the soul; they were commodities, traded and bartered in the bustling markets that lined the neon-lit streets. Happiness, sorrow, anger – all had a price, and citizens wore their chosen emotions like badges, signaling their status and desires to the world.

In the heart of Scarvidia, where the skyline was painted in hues of pulsating lights, there existed a clandestine world beyond the sanctioned emotion markets. A place whispered about in the darkest corners, hidden from the watchful eyes of the Emotion Authority. It was known as the Forbidden Bazaar, a black market where emotions deemed too dangerous, too potent, were peddled in secrecy.

Arvid, a disillusioned office clerk weary of the monotony of his prescribed emotions, stumbled upon rumors of the Forbidden Bazaar. His curiosity, like an itch he couldn't ignore, led him through labyrinthine alleyways to a concealed entrance guarded by shadows.

Once inside, the air changed, thick with the mingling scents of fear and desire. Stall after stall displayed vials of emotions in hues unseen in the regulated markets. Arvid approached a mysterious vendor with eyes that seemed to reflect a thousand untold stories.

"Looking for something special, stranger?" the vendor inquired, his voice low and conspiratorial.

Arvid hesitated, the weight of forbidden curiosity pressing upon him. "What's the rarest emotion you have?"

The vendor's eyes sparkled with a secret knowledge. From beneath the counter, he produced a small vial containing a swirling, midnight-black substance. "This, my friend, is Eclipse," he whispered. "A feeling so intense, so forbidden, that it was erased from existence. A taste of pure obsidian emotion."

Arvid, enticed by the allure of the forbidden, exchanged a handful of his hard-earned credits for the vial. As Eclipse coursed through his veins, it was as if the universe had imploded into a singular, profound sensation. A symphony of emotions, both beautiful and terrifying, surged through him, unraveling the carefully woven threads of his reality.

Little did Arvid know that the Emotion Authority had caught wind of the Forbidden Bazaar's activities. In the midst of his intoxication with Eclipse, a squad of enforcers burst into the clandestine market, their blank faces a stark contrast to the riot of emotions surrounding them.

Chaos erupted as vendors scattered, emotions spilled like liquid secrets, and Arvid found himself at the center of the storm. The enforcers, clad in emotion-nullifying suits, approached him with a cold detachment that sent shivers down his spine.

"You've violated the Emotion Code," one of them declared, their voice devoid of any sentiment.

As they apprehended Arvid, he glimpsed the remaining vials of Eclipse shattered on the ground, the forbidden emotions evaporating into the air like a wisp of forgotten dreams. The black market, once a haven for those seeking the uncharted territories of the human soul, faded into the shadows once more, leaving Arvid to face the consequences of chasing emotions beyond the sanctioned spectrum.
